LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
Office of Secondary Instruction
INSTRUCTIONS FOR
COMPLETION OF APPLICATION FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE CREDIT
TO THE STUDENT. Before
filling out this application, please read the following carefully
A student may receive credit for foreign language
instruction received in a private school when he or she is enrolled in grade 9
or a higher grade, providing the following requirements have been met.
1.
The minimum amount of foreign language instructional
time for which 10 credits may be granted is 120 clock hours. A one-year foreign
language course offered by the Los Angeles Unified School District provides
approximately 155 clock hours of instruction.
2.
A maximum of 40 credits is permitted for instruction
in a private school.
3.
Consistent with District policy, credit for foreign
language instruction granted on the basis of the procedures herein described
may be used for acceleration purposes only when the District principal has
approved a program of acceleration that has been planned by the student,
parent, and the counselor prior to enrollment in the private school.
If you decide to apply for credit, you must:
1.
Fill out Part I of the application carefully. Note
that your application must include the exact title and number of the course, or
courses, for which you desire credit.
2.
Obtain the signature of your counselor at the Los
Angeles Unified School District school which you are attending, so that he or
she may be informed of your intention to apply for credit.
3.
Return your application to the principal of your
private school.
4.
Pass an examination which demonstrates that you are
able to understand, speak, read, and write the foreign language at that level
of proficiency which is expected of students who have completed a comparable
course or courses in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
TO THE PRINCIPALS OF
PRIVATE SCHOOLS:
You are requested to observe the following procedures
relative to applications and examinations:
1.
Issue a copy of the “Application and Authorization
Form for Foreign Language Credit” as requested by the student attending your
school, who shall complete Part I and return the form to you. Additional copies
of the application form may be obtained from the Specialist, Foreign Language,
Los Angeles Unified School District. P O Box 3307, Los Angeles 90051.
2.
Ask students to obtain the signature of the
counselor at the Los Angeles Unified School District school which he or she is
attending and return the application to you.
3.
Certify in Part II of the application and authorization
form the foreign language instruction that the student has completed, or is now
receiving, and determine the course or courses for which he or she is eligible
to receive credit through examination.
4.
Administer an examination, prepared in cooperation
with the Specialist, Foreign Language, Los Angeles Unified School District, to
students in accordance with each student’s eligibility.
5.
Certify in Part III of the application form whether
or not the student satisfactorily passed the examination and is entitled to
receive credit. Because credit must be recorded in terms of completion of
equivalent courses in the Los Angeles Unified School District, course titles
should correspond to those used in the District.
6.
Mail the completed application and authorization
form directly to the principal of the public school which the student is
attending so that it will be received by the public school no later than the
last day of the school year of the Los Angeles Unified School District. If the
credit for which a 12th grade student has applied is necessary for
his or her graduation during the current school year, the completed application
and authorization form must be received by the public school in which the
student is enrolled no later than Wednesday of the 18th week of the
spring semester.
TO COUNSELORS IN JUNIOR AND
SENIOR SCHOOLS:
Procedures for granting credit to students who have
received foreign language instruction in private schools other than regular day
or boarding schools are described in Office of Instructions, Bulletin No. 59,
dated December 10, 1984.
