Chinese Language School of Southern California

                  Activity Clubs 2008-2009

 

Program Time: 9/20 ¨C 6/13 (Saturdays) 11:45 a.m. ¨C 12:45 p.m.*, total of 28 classes

(* Parent classes for Tai-Chi & Chinese music are available from 10:45 ¨C 11:45)

 

Club Fee: $80 for the school year. No refund after 10/11/08. You may transfer to another club only once per school year with approval from both club teachers. Club material fee varies and will be determined and collected by the club teachers.

 

Parents are welcomed to join the club with different fee schedule. Please ask at time of signup for details.

 

Club Description:

(1) Chinese Calligraphy:

Learn the art of using ancient Chinese brush to create the art of writing, balance, and concentration.

(2) Martial Arts:

Chop! Slam! Chop! Kick! Want to be a kid who knows real Chinese Kung-Fu?

(3) Chinese Folk Dance:

Do you know there are more than 300 kinds of Chinese ethnic dances? Come and learn to dance and to enjoy the colorful costumes of Chinese dance.

(4) Chinese Music Instrument:*

What is Pi-Pa? What is Gu-Zheng? National renowned master from China teaches you amazingly beautiful sound of music from the orient. This class also runs a parent session from 10:45 ¨C 11:45.

(5) Scientific Handcrafts:

One of our most popular! Space is limited so sign up early. How do you build a model airplane? Do you know ancient Chinese create fireworks and many other inventions? (Due to the use of glue guns and sharp tools this class has an age requirement of 9 years and older.)

(6) Culture and homework club:

This is a great class for credit students who like to obtain more in-depth knowledge about Chinese culture. Our teacher has great patience and can help non-Chinese speaking families with their homework.

 (7) SAT ¨CII:

Back by popular demand! This class is for credit students and parents. It prepares students to score higher on college entrance exams.

(8) Basketball club:

Always well liked by our students and future Yao Ming¡¯s! Taught by experienced coaches and enthusiastic parents!

(9) Conversation:

How do you order fried rice in a Chinese restaurant? Do you wish to learn daily conversation with fun? Try this class and  you will be surprised to know learning Chinese is not hard at all!

(10) Chinese Painting:

Brand new class. Your kid will touch Chinese culture through magical brushes and imagination.

(11) Singing:

Brand new class. You want to be the next American Idol?  Take this class and the teacher will teach you how.

 (12) Chess:

The next Bobby Fischer is right here. Maybe it¡¯s you.

(13) Westside Breeze:

This new class will help teach your kids Chinese writing, typing, and translation, and also computer graphic techniques (e.g., Photoshop).  This is a great opportunity if your kids would like to have some kind of journalistic experience.  By taking this class your child can also earn Chinese credits.  A laptop is highly recommended, but not required.

(* Parent sessions for Tai-Chi and Chinese music is available from 10:45 ¨C 11:45. Parents are welcome to sign up any 11:45-12:45 club activities along with students.)

 

Club Fee: $80 per school year*. No refund after 10/11/08. You may transfer to another club, but only once per school year.

 

Club material fee varies and will be determined and collected by the club teachers. (*Parent class fee varies, $80 for all 11:45 to 12:45 classes except Chinese music. $20/class for Chinese music and $10/class for Tai-Chi, the fee will be collected monthly at the beginning of each month.)

 

For students who need 4 hours per week to claim their language credits, Chinese Calligraphy, Culture/Homework, and SAT II are available. Please verify these classes with your regular school. Unless the club Teacher AND the club Director approve your absence in writing, you cannot miss more than 2 classes per school year. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their home high school regarding policy on foreign language credits.
